Should You Drain

Your Battery Before

Every Charge?

If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s a good idea to fully drain your e-bike or e-scooter battery before plugging it back in — the short answer is NO.

Modern electric mobility devices use lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries, and both types prefer regular top-ups rather than full discharges. Draining your battery to 0% before every charge can actually shorten its lifespan.

The Right Way to Charge

For optimal battery longevity, it’s best to:

  • Charge after every ride to maintain a healthy state of charge.

  • Keep your battery between 50% and 80% whenever possible.

  • Avoid leaving it fully discharged for long periods.

This simple practice helps preserve your battery’s health and performance over the long run.

Why You Shouldn’t Fully Drain Lead Acid Batteries

Deep discharging lead-acid batteries can cause:

  • Irreversible sulfation – hardens sulfate crystals, permanently reducing capacity.

  • Plate damage – weakens internal plates, leading to material loss.

  • Cell reversal – can permanently damage cells by reversing polarity.

In short: Leaving it discharged, over-discharging, or overheating are the fastest ways to kill a lead-acid battery.

Think of your battery like your body — don’t run it till it’s empty. Regular “meals” (charging sessions) keep it healthy and strong for the long ride ahead.
